I BELIEVE IN THE RESURRECTION OF THE BODY,

Does anyone really believe that
our bodies live-on after we have died?
Would anyone want to suffer eternally
as we, in old age, suffer now?
or do we imagine renewal
of our past youth?

The concept is untenable
when looked at through eyes
unblinkered by a religious glaze.

Might this refer to the resurrection of Jesus,
that his body returned after death
as the Bible might seem to say?

Some see the two ideas as inseparable.
If Jesus rose again, physically,
then we shall do so too.

The words of Jesus on the subject
reflect the Pharisaic doctrine of his day.
He was a child of his time and environment
and its underlying perceptions of the world.
In accepting the truths of his teachings
we are not bound by the misconceptions
coming from lack of modern knowledge.

But is there any resurrection,
any further existence after death in some form?
After death does our Spirit live on
as a recognisable separate entity?

This concept is the very foundation of religion
and the hope that lies within each of us,
but is it a hope or a certainty?
