We recycle to promote the survival of our planet,
to reduce global warming, counter the effects
of our excessive consumption.
Given the chance, if we let it,
creation will recover what we destroy.
Each of us is focussed on our own survival,
welfare, riches, pleasure, health or fame.
Surely there is a nobler cause on which to focus
something more worthwhile in the long run.
The message of Christ focusses on
personal interdependence and mutual love.
We can sign up to that message or accept
the inevitable destruction of our planet
as selfish individualism strips it of its wealth.
We can compete, destructively, over vanishing resources,
or we can join together to assist and ensure survival.
It is our choice, individually and as a race.
We can love or fight each other;
Become loving or extinct.
Personally I prefer to think that I will have descendants;
that the oak tree I planted will have time to grow;
that the purposes of God will be realised,
and I think it is worth doing what I can
to make it come about.
Which means:
Loving my neighbour; turning the other cheek
Not responding to hate with hate, to violence violently.
These are the things that Jesus taught.
So we should probably try to find out more about Jesus and his God
to learn more and join a group of others on the same journey,
which could mean joining some Christian church,
and in doing so becoming part of the team
that is working towards God's purposes,
if often indirectly.
