In the beginning mankind realised their insignificance
in the vastness of Creation that lay around them;
their need for protection from imagined dangers;
their need for comfort from despair or injury;
their need for a greater reality
than themselves.
Their need for God.
A protective male divinity, strong, powerful,
shielding them from all the dangers of the day;
a comforting female divinity, loving and kind
dispersing the fears and horrors of the night.
And mankind came to feel the fragility of their lives
their short life-span before returning to the earth;
the immensity of the sweep of time around them
and the lack of meaning in their earthly life;
their fear of eventual non-being.
Their need for an eternal God
giving a real significance,
to their brief existence.
