A DEBT TO THE FUTURE

We may depart into a mystery beyond our conception,
but do we owe any debt to those we leave behind,
our descendants and the future world?
Have we a moral responsibility
to them?

For my life, I inherited a world riven by war;
desperately recovering its footing
after sliding into the morass
of armed conflict.

I seem to be passing on a world
of plague, overcrowding, overheating
and a morality built on spirals of purity
for a range of disparate but unrelated causes
driven by envy and competition rather than by love.

Could it be that a change to the moral climate
may arise from a change to religious doctrine
and so save a people from the fearful abyss
of global destruction by overheating?

Could the answer still be Jesus if he can be recovered
from the supernatural magician of present doctrine?
