Oh Lord, how can I find you in the maelstrom
in the whirlpool of my unresting mind
in the dullness of my perception?
Where are you when I step unwary off the curb?
Are you guiding my every step, my protector?
Where are you when I speak hurtful words
deny the rights or worth of another?
Where are you in the hurts of this world;
beaten wives, slavery, domination?
Do you protect or turn away?
Are the innocent safe
in Your hands?
Where are you when my friends and loved ones,
fall, desperate, into the grim potholes of life,
divorced, depressed, sick and dying?
Do they mean nothing to you?
Why are You powerless in the face of evil?
Why, Lord, will you not act for good?
Why can we not rely on You
to heal our wounds?
Where are You when I need You,
when the world needs You?
I believe that You are,
but what are You?
and where
and why?
