It is generally forgotten
that the Gospel stories
need to be read in the framework
of imminent or actual revolution.
Only John's Gospel is written past that time.

The reality of punitive revenge
and the destruction of the homeland
lies behind every tale of their time.

These writings, seen in that context,
surely carry a relevant message;
a clarion call to the nation
even a hidden record of
resistance:

Of meetings in the hills,
Of conversions to the cause,
Of the release of captives,
Of hope and salvation
for the desperate.
Even
that the cause will survive
the Roman invasion, which
has crucified their land.
